Welcome to the Register of Deeds
The Register of Deeds office is currently CLOSED to the public due to COVID19.
Applications for vital records and land record documents for recording should be mailed to our physical address, found below.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Regarding third-party vendors selling vital records
We have received an increased number of calls about third-party vendors selling birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates. These companies charge customers high fees to "process" or "help apply" for certificates issued from the Wisconsin Vital Records Office.
To avoid high fees when ordering online, we highly encourage customers to double check the URL of the site you are on to ensure that you are ordering through our contracted vendor VitalChek.
The Dane County Register of Deeds Office is the central location for vital records and land
records for Dane County. Our Vital Records Section maintains and issues copies of certificates
of births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and domestic partnerships that occur in Dane County, and
records military discharge papers for veterans. Our Real
Estate Section maintains and issues copies of land records for property located in Dane County
(deed information), and records a variety of other documents
of significance (firm name registration). Most records are
available for viewing in our office free of charge.
